So the last couple of months have been a little crazy; actually ... a lot crazy! We realized last fall that we were rapidly outgrowing our shared bakery space in Columbia, SC and the time would soon come when we would need to invest in our own production facility. Never one to take the simplest path, I started thinking of moving more than just the business. We had come to love Charleston, SC (who doesn’t?) and started tossing around the idea of relocating both the business and ourselves to the Lowcountry.
So, we huddled up with the three original taste testers (our sons ... all of whom are now grown), and talked through a possible move. When no one raised any objections, the decision was made. We had no idea how long it would take to get the puzzle put together, with coordinating moving both the bakery and our home, but the pieces have fallen into place in an uncanny way.
The ideal bakery location was the first spot we looked at in Charleston and a wonderful new home came our way by word of mouth. We completed moving into the bakery two weeks ago and now are focused on moving our home.
In doing so, we have been sorting through three generations of stuff. I come from a long line of pack rats and am letting go of lots of things that have moved with us from place to place for years. We even found a congratulatory telegram to my grandparents when my mother was born in 1930! It has been fun to look through old baby clothes (mine and my children’s), old photos (the identities of some are forever lost to history), and letters (my mother kept every letter my father wrote to her while he was serving as a Marine—now those, I’m keeping!).
All to say, while the state-of-the-art Grey Ghost kitchen is now in tact, we are now looking forward to getting settled in our new home. With salty breezes blowing and the smell of pluff mud in the air, we welcome you to come see us soon!
